Tinta de Toro is the native variety of the region and represents 90% of the vineyards of the Certificate of Origin.

In spite of the little information available about it, it is believed that the Romans ( 210 BC ) were the first ones to develop wine-growing in the Duero basin. As a matter of fact, the name at that time is likely to have been Octo-durium, Otero de Duero referring to its geographic situation in a high zone and with views to the Duero river.

There are a lot of documents dated from XVI century that ordered, regulated and acknowledged wine-growing and its economic importance in the town of Toro. In those years, wine was already sold to other countries as well as for its quality as for being a kind of wine that kept its quality and preservation during long journeys.

During the years of the phylloxera plague at the end of the XIX century, Tinta de Toro was planted in loose sandy and well drained soils which has enabled to keep the increase of the vineyards ungrafted until today. That’s why DO Toro is a region that still has old vineyards.

In 1990 The Castilla y León local government developed a plan of clonal and sanitary selection of the vine, rescuing and increasing the native varieties of the region, Tinta de Toro among them. The variety is currently protected by a stamp of certification as native grape, with agricultural and ampelographic specific characteristics.

How is Tinta de Toro like

Its characteristics are similar to Tempranillo or Tinto Fino, but because of its adaptation to the zone for centuries, it is identifies with its own name and personality.

The Certificate of Origin Toro was made legal in 1987.
The word Toro comes from “otero”, isolated hill above a plain. It also refers to its special geographic situation as a high place or grandeur of the plot.

Production zone

Southeast of the Zamora Province and southwest of Valladolid in Castilla y León. It includes part of the natural regions of Tierra del Vino, Valle del Guareña and Tierra del Toro and it borders the paramos of Tierra del Pan and Tierra de Campos.


Sandstones, clay and limestone sediments which make the surface of the soil brown limestone. There are different types of soils: muddy, thick and thin sandstone with layers of limestone and loam formed during the Miocene.


62,000ha of the land. The vineyard area is about 8,000 ha, 5,000 of which is registered in the Regulating Council. There are 1,200 wine-growers registered.


Between 620 and 750 meters.


Large number of prephylloxeric vineyards and ungrafted because of sandy soils resistant to the phylloxera.


Extreme continental with Atlantic influences , arid and with high contrasts of grades between day and night. Average annual temperature of 12-13ºC, 350-400mm yearly average of rain and 2,600 hours of sun per year.
